How to create a mindful life
Create your mindful life space
Create a mindful life align your inner and outer spaces
Through the practices of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, we can cultivate both inner and outer spaces that nurture wellbeing. These practices not only help us create a sanctuary within ourselves but also influence how we design and interact with the spaces around us—whether at home, work, or in nature.
My first point of call is always the MAT. It was the first space I felt my mind and body align. It was the space where I felt save, where I felt myself with no pain at the time of turmoil. To this date, at the end of every practice, I ask myself: What can I take from the mat, off the mat? And so, the creation of my mindfulness spaces starts again and again from the inside out. If I can, you can too.
The Inner Space: Cultivating Calm and Clarity
Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness invite us to slow down and turn our attention inward. Yoga helps us connect with our bodies, releasing tension and enhancing awareness through movement and breath. Meditation cultivates a stillness of mind, offering a space where thoughts can settle, and clarity can emerge. Mindfulness, integrated into daily life, encourages a non-judgemental presence that fosters acceptance and reduces stress.
Together, these practices build a mental and emotional “space” — a sacred inner environment where we can reconnect with ourselves, find peace, and approach life with greater resilience. This inner space acts as a foundation for how we engage with the world around us.
The Outer Space: Shaping Our Environments Mindfully
Our external environments—our homes, workplaces, and natural surroundings—can either reflect and support our inner mindfulness or contribute to distraction and stress. Creating mindful outer spaces involves intentional choices that promote calm, focus, and comfort.
At Home: A mindful home is a sanctuary. Decluttering physical spaces can mirror the clearing of mental clutter. Choosing natural materials, gentle colours, and incorporating plants can connect us to nature and encourage tranquility. Dedicated corners for yoga or meditation reinforce habit and ritual.
At Work: Office spaces often buzz with activity and noise, but even here, mindfulness can be cultivated. Simple changes like organising the workspace, adding natural light or greenery, and incorporating brief mindful breaks help sustain focus and reduce burnout.
In Nature: Nature itself is a profound mindful space. Spending time outdoors grounds us, reminding us of the rhythms and beauty beyond our constructed environments. The tactile experiences of grass beneath feet, the sound of birdsong, and the scent of fresh air enhance our sensory awareness.
The Connection: Harmonising Inner and Outer Spaces
When we align our inner states with our outer environments, we create a harmonious feedback loop. A calm inner space can influence us to shape peaceful external surroundings, while supportive external spaces encourage deeper inner stillness. Our inner and outer spaces become symbiotic, mutually dependent.
Practising yoga and meditation in well-considered spaces amplifies their benefits. Mindfulness teaches us to become aware of how our environment affects us—encouraging us to adapt or transform spaces to better serve our wellbeing.
By consciously creating both inner and outer spaces that nurture mindfulness, we develop resilience, creativity, and a deeper connection to ourselves and the world around us.
Embracing these practices and environments invites a fuller experience of life, grounded in presence and peace. Discover your mindfulness space inside and outside—wherever you may be.
